(Athens, Georgia-AP) -- Former Oklahoma coach Gary Gibbs is the new defensive coordinator at Georgia. The school has fired Kevin Ramsey from the post after only one season, but offered him a chance to stay on in another position. It's not yet known if he will accept.
Gibbs has been out of coaching since he resigned as the Sooners coach in 1994. But he has close ties to Georgia coach Jim Donnan, who served with him on Barry Switzer's Oklahoma staff in the 1980s. Gibbs was defensive coordinator and Donnan the offensive coordinator for the Sooners from 1985 to 1988. The 47-year-old Gibbs says Donnan is the reason he's taking the job. Gibbs had a record of 44-23-and-2 as Oklahoma's coach.
