A man pleaded guilty Friday to shooting his father in the head and killing him as the two fought over gun.
Michael Lee Hanson, 33, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the Nov. 9 killing of Milford Francis Hanford. The second-degree murder charge was an alternative in a Dec. 9 federal indictment that also contained a first-degree murder count.
The case is being prosecuted in federal court because the Hansons are American Indians. The body was also found on Indian land in Craig County near Vinita. FBI Special Agent Keith Kohne testified earlier that Milford Hanson's body was found wrapped in plastic in a shallow grave on Nov. 12. Kohne said Hanson admitted killing his father in a tape-recorded telephone conversation.
Michael Hanson will be sentenced April 7. Under the terms of a plea agreement, he cannot ask for less than 30 years in prison. The sentence for second-degree murder is 10 years to life.
Federal prisoners are required to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences.
