LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech shook off a determined Oral Roberts team for an 84-70 victory Wednesday night with help from Andy Ellis 23 point performance. Texas Tech (7-2) won for the seventh time in its past eight outings.

The Red Raiders overcame a pair of 9-point deficits in the first half and withstood a final charge from the Golden Eagles(5-6) late in the game. A follow-up shot by Tech's Brodney Kennard staked the Raiders to a 52-43 lead in the early stages of the second half, but OralRoberts, fueled by the 3-point shooting of Eric Perry, cut the gap to 55-51 with just more than 14 minutes remaining.

A Perry free throw at the 11:49 mark capped a 16-7 rally for Oral Roberts and tied the game at 57. The Red Raiders eventually pushed the lead to 74-64 on a pair of Ellis free throws with 4:11 remaining. The Golden Eagles got no closer than 4 points the rest of the way as Tech scored on its final five possessions of the game.

Oral Roberts started quickly, jumping to a 19-10 lead midway through the first half. However, Tech scored nine points during a span of just more than a minute left in the half and took a 31-28 lead. The Red Raiders, who hit only one of their first seven shots, finished the half by converting 16 of their final 23 and claiming a 40-33 advantage at intermission. Joining Ellis in double figures for Tech was Mario Layne with 18, Rayford Young with 16 and Kennard with 12. Reggie Tate led Oral Roberts with points. Derrick Taylor added 15, Perry had 12 and Nathan Binam had 11.
