(Miami, Oklahoma-AP) -- An Ottawa County judge today ordered a trial to settle whether the Grand River Dam Authority is liable for
flooding in northeast Oklahoma and if damages are owed to landowners.
Judge Robert Reavis also rejected plaintiffs' requested injunction against the dam's operation. The G-R-D-A says it will likely appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court.
More than 100 plaintiffs sued the G-R-D-A for 22 million dollars over damage during floods on the Neosho River from 1992 to 1995. They allege the G-R-D-A mismanaged the dam by raising water levels on Grand Lake and causing upriver, or backwater, flooding on
the Neosho River, which feeds the lake.
G-R-D-A officials blame the flooding on the U-S Army Corps of Engineers and its management of water levels on the dam during flood conditions.
