It's an unusual partnership--conservative North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms and a liberal Baptist congregation.
Both are working to bring a seven-year-old Cuban boy to the United States for treatment of a potentially fatal disease.
Helms is helping members of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh. Pullen has a history of working for liberal social causes.
Some involved in the effort worry that bringing Helms in will antagonize the Cuban government because of his backing of the U-S trade embargo.
But others say it's worth the risk in order to cut through the red tape of American-Cuban relations to keep a little boy from dying
