TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper John "Buddy" Hamilton has been released from a Tulsa hospital after being wounded in a shooting in which a fellow trooper was killed.
Hamilton, who was shot during a drug raid near Sallisaw on Friday, was released from the hospital on Sunday.
The 39-year-old trooper was hit in the eye and shoulder by fragments of glass and bullets when officers went to arrest Kenneth Eugene Barrett.
Trooper David "Rocky" Eales died when he was struck by a bullet under his right arm, an area not protected by his bulletproof vest. The bullet went through his chest and out his left side.
Barrett, 38, was also shot. He was treated at a Tulsa hospital before being transferred on Saturday to the Sallisaw City jail. Barrett suffered gunshot wounds to his thigh, buttock and knee.
Authorities also took Barrett's 18-year-old son in custody. Toby Barrett was found in a shed west of the house. It has not been determined if the son was involved in the shootings.
An aunt said the son had been living with his father for six weeks and was an honor student.
Several troopers and the district attorney's drug task force had gone to Barrett's house to execute a search warrant and to arrest Barrett.
Troopers have issued a warning against sending donations to anyone soliciting money over the telephone for a memorial fund for the slain trooper. The patrol does not solicit funds over the telephone.
A memorial fund has been set up for the family of Eales. Donations may be sent to Rocky Eales Memorial Fund, c/o Chief's Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol. P.O. Box 11415, Oklahoma City, OK 73136.
