Sports has always been big business in Tulsa and it just got bigger. On June 7, the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced its selection of Tulsa as the site for the 2001 WAC Basketball Tournament. The event will be held in March at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa and will include men's and women's teams from eight member universities: Tulsa, San Jose State, Texas Christian, Fresno State, Rice, SMU, Texas at El Paso, and Hawaii.

The tournament bid was presented by the Tulsa Sports Commission in partnership with the University of Tulsa and the Tulsa Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Tulsa Chamber of Commerce estimates that the tournament will have a $2 million impact on the metropolitan area.
