OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- AAA Oklahoma is reporting a fifth straight day of record high gas prices in Oklahoma and offering some tips on improving fuel efficiency.
The statewide average price for a gallon of self-serve regular is $1.98 per gallon, an increase of more than a penny from Monday. The average in Oklahoma City is $1.97 and the Tulsa average is almost $1.99 per gallon.
AAA spokesman Chuck Mai says there are four specific areas to look at to improve gas mileage, starting with properly inflated tires. Underinflated tires can reduce gas mileage by up to two percent.
Engines should be checked for proper tuning and idle speed and a clean air filter can save several cents-per-gallon.
And other items such as a defective thermostat can reduce fuel efficiency.
