CHANDLER, Okla. (AP) -- A man who bolted from deputies at the Lincoln County courthouse was back in custody Friday after a brief manhunt.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers recaptured William James Schoeneke at about 8 AM under a bridge on I-44 near Davenport.
Officers used tracking dogs and rode mules to chase Schoeneke for about eight miles before they caught him, said Trooper Pete Norwood.
"The dogs actually chased him up onto the turnpike," Norwood said. "That guy ran for about seven or eight miles so he was probably pretty tired and cold."
Schoeneke escaped Thursday afternoon as he and 12 other prisoners were being taken from a courtroom in Chandler, where Schoeneke faces an assault charge in the stabbing of a Chandler woman.
Schoeneke also is wanted in Pottawatomie County on conspiracy and kidnapping charges, Norwood said.
