OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Officials with MCI say they're committed to keeping a promise to create 1,600 jobs in Oklahoma, despite an announcement the company will be bought by Verizon Communications and jobs will be cut.

MCI agreed to create jobs in Oklahoma with salaries of at least $35,000 a year to settle felony charges of accounting fraud. The fraud charges were filed against WorldCom, which now operates as MCI.

If MCI fails to create the jobs as promised the company must pay a $15.4-million penalty to the state.
