DEARBORN, Michigan (AP) _ Ford is recalling nearly a half million Escape SUVs worldwide, to fix an accelerator problem that could cause the engines to race.

Ford says it doesn't know of any accidents or injuries related to the problem. In some cases, Ford says a liner over the accelerator cable may prevent the engine from returning to idle.

The vehicles in question are from model years 2002 to 2004. The vast majority of them have been sold in the US.

Owners will be notified by Ford and can have the cable replaced at no charge.
