Thousands of Oklahomans could soon get a break on their property taxes. But first they have to figure out how the recently passed State Question 714 affects them.
Question 714 is supposed to make it financially easier on Oklahoma seniors who own their homes, by freezing their property taxes at the current rate.
Before seniors making more than $25,000 a year weren't eligible. Now they can make as much as the average for their area. In Tulsa county thats $54,500 a year.
"This is going to allow someone living in a house not to have future increases in their taxes," said Ken Yazel, Tulsa County Assessor.
The Tulsa County Assessor's office asks seniors who think they might be eligible to start preparing now. You can't actually file for the exemption until January.
But, you should pull your tax returns and call the Tulsa County Assessor Office for more information. The number is 596-5000.
