Broken Arrow police say what started as a domestic dispute quickly escalated into an officer defending himself. Broken Arrow police officer Juan Jenkins responded to a domestic call in what residents describe as a quiet neighborhood.

When the officer arrived, he found 28 year-old Vu Dang upset. Dang's family says he was off his medication. When Officer Jenkins tried to quiet the situation, police say Dang started fighting with the officer and Jenkins responded.

"The officer, during the confrontation, used pepper spray and a baton with minimal effect. The individual retreated into the kitchen, got a chair, and approached the officer," said Captain Paul Kroutter/Broken Arrow Police Department.

That's when Officer Jenkins pulled out his gun and fired one shot at the suspect, hitting him in the abdomen.

Police say Dang was awake and responsive when he was flown by helicopter to the hospital. Residents of the quiet area are shocked.

Officer Jenkins was slightly hurt in the scuffle. He suffered a possible broken nose and cuts and bruises. The suspect Vu Dang underwent surgery and is expected to recover.

The case is still under investigation.
