LONG POND, Pa. (AP) -- Ryan Newman extended his current run of qualifying excellence by winning the pole for the Pocono 500. Its the third straight Nextel Cup pole position for the Roger Penske team driver. He has yet to win a race this season but he's coming off a second place finish Monday in the Dover International Speedway.
Newman's pole win interrupts Denny Hamlin's domination at Pocono Raceway. Hamlin won both poles and both races at the track last year but had to settle for second on the starting grid this time.
Martin Truex, Junior qualified third after winning at Dover on Monday.
