If you fly Southwest Airlines in August, you'll see something familiar in the in-flight magazine, Tulsa! In fact, the city is getting a 36-page in-depth profile. The News On 6’s Steve Berg reports Tulsa is the first city to get that kind of ink since a new company took over publishing the magazine.
Coming to a seatback near you in August, Tulsa is the featured attraction in Spirit Magazine.
"It's a big deal for Tulsa,†said Chris Denby of Spirit Magazine. “It's a big deal for the airline and for the magazine, so we're really excited about it."
Denby heads a group of two writers, three editors and a photographer that has been scouring the city for the past month, doing dozens of interviews, looking for what makes Tulsa tick.
"Like a lot of people, I didn't know what to expect,†Denby said. “Midwestern city is about all I knew, an old oil city perhaps."
So why choose a city off the beaten path? For that very reason.
"We certainly look for cities that may have been, and excuse the pun, flying under the radar,†said Denby. “So we love to select cities that a lot of people may not know anything about or have misconceptions or preconceptions about."
Denby says they'll cover everything from business to healthcare to culture to education, everything that makes up Tulsa's quality of life.
"Tremendous arts community here, a very young professional scene here. It's got a great collegiate atmosphere, great restaurants, great nightlife, so I've been pleasantly surprised," Denby said.
Spirit Magazine reaches more than three million people each month. And August, when the Tulsa article comes out, just happens to be the month the PGA championship comes to Tulsa.
"The timing couldn't be better frankly,†Denby said. “Obviously there'll be a lot of people traveling into Tulsa for the PGA Championship, so they're going to get a good look at what Tulsa has to offer. A lot of people are going to get an eyeful of what this city is all about."
Denby says this will be the same magazine on all Southwest flights, which go to 63 different cities in 32 states. So, officials say this is the most coverage that Tulsa has gotten in a long time.
