A community dealing with teen violence, drug abuse and teen pregnancy comes together to bring kids a positive message. The North Tulsa Community Coalition rounded up residents for a big block party Saturday. It was filled with music, food, fun and an important message.
A former gang member, turned motivational speaker told the crowd, especially the children, that they hold the key to their future. The choices they make have an impact on the rest of their lives. Through his past mistakes, he's hoping to change our children's future for the better.
"There's a lot of problems that we're not gonna answer today, but, we believe we've taken a great step forward for our community, for this city to see young people's and families' lives turned around," said Dean Heath.
Saturday's block party wrapped up a week-long initiative called "Project Impact". Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor says the key to affecting violence and building stronger neighborhoods is working directly with kids and their families. Taylor says "Project Impact" is a great example of just that.
