OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A student at the University of Central Oklahoma is turning her battle with bacterial meningitis into a public awareness campaign. Amanda Moran was diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease on the day she was scheduled to check into her college dorm room last year.
The infection of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord forced her to miss her first semester of college and left her with lingering health problems.
Since her recovery, the 22-year-old junior has changed her major to community health, plans to go to medical school and spends much of her time urging others to immunize themselves against the disease.
She appeared at the state Capitol today with state lawmakers to focus attention on Meningitis Awareness Day.
