FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- What might have been a game-tying home run by Arkansas pinch hitter Jacob Julius -- with 2 outs in the 9th inning, a man on base and LSU leading 5-3 – instead provided the final out.
The wind caught the ball long enough to bring it within range of LSU center fielder Jared Mitchell. He made a leaping catch at the wall at Fayetteville today to give the Tigers a 2-1 final edge in their weekend series with the Razorbacks.
Arkansas started the bottom of the 9th trailing 5-2, but a leadoff solo homer by Danny Hamblin made it 5-3 and gave Hogs fans some hope. Hamblin finished the day 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
LSU starter Jared Bradford is now 10-2 with the win, his second this weekend. He worked 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts. Arkansas starter Duke Welker takes the loss and falls to 5-3 after allowing 5 runs -- 4 of them earned -- on 8 hits over 7 innings of work that included 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
LSU is now 28-2-1, 11-12-1 in the Southeastern Conference, while Arkansas falls to 36-14, 16-8.
