OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The chairman of the annual watermelon festival in Rush Springs says the publicity over naming the watermelon the state vegetable has been a good thing.

Dan Williams says all the attention has been good publicity for the festival which started in 1948.

Legislation declaring the watermelon the official state vegetable was sponsored by Representative Joe Dorman of Rush Springs. He says he did so because the state already has an official fruit -- the strawberry.

Governor Henry signed the bill last week.
