SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- An Oklahoma City native will be the next chairman and chief executive of AT&T.

Randall Stephenson will replace current CEO Edward Whitacre Jr. who announced unexpectedly Friday that he will retire in June.

Stephenson started with Southwestern Bell in 1982 in Oklahoma and rose through the ranks of the company as it grew and is currently chief operating officer.

He has also been chief financial officer and chairman of the board of Cingular Wireless which is a joint venture between AT&T and BellSouth.
