FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) _ Arkansas basketball player Charles Thomas was arrested after a dispute with his former girlfriend and is charged with suspicion of third-degree battery, police said.

Thomas, 21, was freed on bond a couple of hours after the 3:10 p.m. dispute on Saturday, Fayetteville police said. The disagreement left both Thomas and the woman with skin abrasions.

Thomas is scheduled to appear at Fayetteville District Court on May 21.

Sgt. Dominic Swanfeld of the Fayetteville Police Department, reading from an incident report, said the arrest was made after officers went to an apartment in southeast Fayetteville about 3:10 p.m. in response to a call from Sarah Thompson, 21. The report said the officers encountered her outside the apartment, crying, and she told them that she and Thomas had argued.

She told police she suffered carpet burns when Thomas pushed her forcefully to the floor. Thomas had two small scrapes on his chin, Swanfeld said.

Coach John Pelphrey, out of town on a recruiting trip, would not comment on Thomas' arrest, according to spokesman Robbie Edwards.

Thomas, 6-foot-8 and weighing 243 pounds, is originally from Jackson, Miss. He started 29 games last season, leading the Razorbacks with 195 rebounds. He was also third on the team in scoring. Thomas averaged 10.7 points per game last season.

Arkansas officials acknowledged on April 4 that two players had failed drug tests for marijuana and one player was under academic suspension. The announcement came after the firing of coach Stan Heath and a couple of days after Creighton's Dana Altman accepted the job, then changed his mind. Pelphrey took over after the announcement about the drug tests and academic problem.

Before Thomas, the last Arkansas basketball player to be arrested was former guard Eric Ferguson. He was stopped for drunken driving on November 6, 2005, and later entered a guilty plea.
