OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Governor Brad Henry issued an executive order on Thursday creating a task force to study safety and security on Oklahoma college campuses. Henry referred to the killings at Virginia Tech this week in his announcement.

"As events this week have reminded us all, tragedy can strike anywhere at any time," the governor said. "It is imperative that we work to ensure the safety and security of the students, faculty and staff on Oklahoma's campuses. Oklahoma's campuses are safe, but we can never be too careful when it comes to safety. This task force will be charged with examining current security practices and recommending specific measures to better protect campuses and improve emergency response."

The Campus Life and Safety and Security Task Force will consist of representatives of state colleges and universities, CareerTech institutions, the commissioner of public safety and the commissioner of mental health.

Glen Johnson, higher education chancellor, said he already has requested colleges and universities review their security plans.

"The tragedy at Virginia Tech University brings home all too familiar feelings of loss to many Oklahomans, and we must be tireless in our determination to do everything possible to prevent future tragedies," Johnson said.
