BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ Van Chancellor, the winningest coach in WNBA history, will interview for the LSU women's coaching job, athletic director Skip Bertman said.
Bertman told Louisiana Gannett News that Chancellor, who led the Houston Comets to four championships before resigning three months ago, will come to Baton Rouge, perhaps early next week, to interview for the post abruptly vacated by Pokey Chatman before this year's NCAA tournament.
``We want Van to meet the players, the academic advisers, the chancellor, the strength coach, everybody,'' Bertman said.
Bertman declined an interview Saturday with The Associated Press.
Chancellor isn't the only coach who will interview for the job, Bertman said. Judy Southard, the associate athletic director guiding the search, has spoken with ``a lot of coaches,'' he said.
Earlier this week, Chancellor said he was interested in the job, seeing it as ``one of the best jobs in the country right now,'' and saying he wants to coach again.
However, on Friday, Chancellor said: ``I want to leave it up to LSU at this point.''
Chatman resigned amid allegations of improper conduct with one or more former players. Assistant coach Bob Starkey, who became the acting coach, won four games to get LSU to its fourth straight Final Four, but he's told Bertman and Southard that he is not interested in the head role permanently.
Chancellor is set to be inducted in September into the Basketball Hall of Fame. For 19 seasons, he coached Mississippi, leading the women's program to a 439-154 record and 14 NCAA tournaments. He also coached the U.S. women's Olympic basketball team to a 2004 gold medal and the Comets to the first four WNBA titles.
