Four local child advocate agencies honored child abuse and neglect victims on Monday. Volunteers placed pinwheels out in Veterans Park as part of 'Pinwheels for Prevention.' The event kicks off National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month. Each of the pinwheels represents the more than 1,200 child abuse and neglect cases reported to DHS in Tulsa County in 2005.
Why pinwheels?
"Well we just wanted to sort of put something out that was symbolic of children, and we thought the pinwheels were a good representation and sort of a little upbeat for such a serious subject,†said Melanie Hamilton with Family and Children’s Services.
The victims of child abuse and neglect will be honored at the state Capitol on April 10th.
