OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Little League baseball and softball teams will be operational in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area later this year, expanding the Little League brand into a relatively new market.

Little League spokesman Chris Downs says Little League teams in Oklahoma have about 2,800 players, which is a low number compared to the rest of the nation.

Travis Buell, the sports director of the YMCAs of Greater Oklahoma City, says most of those teams are located either in the Tulsa metropolitan area or in far western Oklahoma.

Little League is based in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and serves children ages 5 to 18. Its Little League World Series, held annually in August, attracts international media attention, including U.S. television coverage of many games.

The Oklahoma City-area Little League will operate under a charter granted to the YMCAs of Greater Oklahoma City by the Pennsylvania organization.
