Wagoner County Sheriff’s deputies and Patriot Guard riders are preparing for the possible protest of a U.S. Marine's funeral in Wagoner County.
20-year-old Lance Corporal Lance Fisher was killed in a car accident in California. The Marine was in the U.S. for training for a second tour of duty in Iraq.
The controversial Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas has notified Wagoner County authorities they will protest in Wagoner this weekend. All deputies are on stand by and Patriot Guard riders, like Jay Lakey, will also be there to honor Fisher and shield his family from the group's protests. "They're supposed to be a church, but you wonder if the same Bible they're reaching out to is the same one we grew up with. I believe not."
A bill is under consideration in the Oklahoma legislature that would strengthen the state's funeral picketing law.
The bill passed unanimously in the state Senate. It is now in being considered by a state House committtee.
