POTEAU, Okla. (AP) -- At a memorial service for Sergeant Buddy Hughie, speakers recall his willingness to serve others and how it continued through his life, even to the point of his death.

The 25-year-old Hughie died February 19th in Afghanistan.

The US Department of Defense says that a group of soldiers came under enemy small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire, and Afghan soldiers in the group were wounded. Hughie left his position to provide medical assistance when he was shot and killed.

Two of the three injured Afghan soldiers survived.

Oklahoma adjutant general Major General Harry Wyatt said during yesterday's service that Hughie did the right thing by saving other soldiers, even though Hughie didn't have to.

Hughie is survived by his wife, Alexis, and their 3-month old son, Cooper.

Hughie will be buried in his wife's hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.
