LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Police shot and killed a mentally ill man after he stabbed an officer's chest armor with a sharp object during a disturbance at a group home for the disabled, authorities said.

Francisco Mondragon, 24, died Sunday. Officers were called to Fair Oaks Manor around 2 a.m. when Mondragon became violent and threatened two residents and a staff member, said the home's director, Mark Cruz.

Mondragon lunged at one of the officers with a screwdriver-like object and began stabbing him in the chest, police spokesman Lt. Paull Vernon said. Police said the officer's bulletproof vest prevented the weapon from going through.

The officer who was attacked and the one who opened fire were placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation.

Mondragon had been diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia and had lived at the group home for about a year.
