OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma National Guard soldier from Edmond has become the first soldier with the 180th Infantry to receive the Purple Heart in more than 50 years.
Private First Class David Anderson was awarded the medal during a ceremony in Afghanistan after being hit in the back of the head by a fragment from a rocket propelled grenade.
Anderson is a member of Company A but is serving with Company C of the 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry as part of a security force for the Afghan National Army training mission.
Guard Lieutenant Geoff Legler says Anderson is already back on duty.
