HANOI, Vietnam (AP) _ Five miners were killed when a large rock fell on them as they worked to extract zinc ore in northern Vietnam, an official said Monday.

Two men and two women were killed instantly and another man died on the way to a hospital Saturday in Yen Nguyen village in Tuyen Quang province, about 90 miles northwest of Hanoi, said village chief Do Manh Hung.

Two other villagers were hospitalized, he said.

Dozens of miners have been killed in recent years in mining accidents in Vietnam. One of the worst accidents occurred in 1999 in Quang Ninh province _ the country's main coal region _ when 19 workers died in an explosion.
