OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Reports of possible price gouging for gasoline and lodging in the Muskogee area led Attorney General Drew Edmondson to issue a warning Sunday that such practices are illegal.
Edmondson says the state's price gouging statute went into effect Friday after Governor Brad Henry declared a state of emergency due to this weekend's winter storm.
The Oklahoma legislature passed the law following the May 1999 tornado outbreaks that damaged so much of Oklahoma.
The price gouging statute prohibits an increase of more than 10 percent in the price of most goods and services when a state of emergency has been declared.
Edmondson is asking any Oklahoman who suspects price gouging is taking place to contact his office's Consumer Protection Unit at 405-521-2029.
