OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- State education officials say 282 Oklahoma teachers were certified in 2006 by the National Board for Professional Teacher Standards.
The state is seventh in the nation in the number of new teachers certified. Nearly 4 percent of all Oklahoma teachers now have certification to rank as sixth best in the country.
The state pays a $5,000 stipend to teachers who become certified by the national board.
Certification is based on a portfolio which includes student work samples, examples of assignments and videotapes.
The teachers are also rated on their classroom techniques and knowledge of the subjects they teach.
