Thousands of Green Country kids grew up watching Jim during his 25 years at Channel 6. Many of those kids are now teenagers and young adults. News on 6 anchor Omar Villafranca found a very special tribute to Jim online, and we found out the visitors are mainly young viewers.
Jim Giles always applied the latest technology to help track dangerous storms. Now, the latest technology is being used to pay tribute to him.
On the popular Facebook.com we found a page dedicated to the memory of Jim Giles. To our surprise more than 400 people had already visited the site and posted comments.
Most of the messages were from young people, and several said they grew up watching Jim. Many people say they were shocked by his passing. One visitor said, "I miss Jim. I choked back tears when I found out, another says "he was just a really cool, nice guy," one posting said Jim was "The best weatherman in Oklahoma. He'll be missed."
But people weren't just paying tribute on the Internet.
K-HITS, 106.9, owned by Renda Broadcasting, paid tribute to Jim with a promo. The station dropped their own promos for a few days and ran the radio spot to pay their respects.
This outpouring of support shows how many lives Jim Giles touched.
Facebook.com actually had two Jim Giles tribute pages, but the other page was made up of some of the same visitors.
The Daily Oklahoman also had a legacy webpage in Jim's honor, at last check there were already 11 pages of comments.
