TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) Northeastern State University at Tahlequah is down to six finalists as it looks for a new mascot.
NSU is replacing ``Redmen'' as its mascot after the NCAA banned the use of mascots considered hostile or abusive toward American Indians.
The school's Mascot Selection Task Force considered more than 450 suggestions before cutting the list to six finalists.
NSU President Larry Williams says the six are Thunderhawks, Thunderbirds, Riverhawks, Riverwolves, War Eagles, and Wolves.
Northeastern has been known as 'The Redmen' since 1924. Before that NSU was the Warriors.
