STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) _ Oklahoma State cornerback Martel Van Zant is being nominated for a courage award.

Van Zant is a contender for the FedEx Orange Bowl-Football Writers Association of America Courage Award that will be presented at the end of the season.

The award is presented to a player who shows courage either on or off the field in overcoming injury or physical handicap, living through hardship or preventing a disaster.

Van Zant was born deaf as a result of his mother suffering chicken pox while she was pregnant.

He's now a starting cornerback at OSU and picked up his first career interception earlier this year.
