Tulsa firefighters were called to Leisure World Pool and Spa near 61st Street and Garnett about 5 AM Tuesday.
When emergency crews arrived they discovered heavy smoke and fire originating from a rear storage area of the building.
A Tulsa Fire Department haz-mat crew was also deployed due to the concern over the large amount of pool chemicals housed in the business that could catch on fire. Fire officials say it was thought that if the fire spread to the chemicals, the result would be a large release of toxins into the air, which would endanger several surrounding neighborhoods.
Firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control and the danger of a release of hazardous materials into the air rapidly diminished.
Investigators are currently looking into the cause of the fire.
The intersection of 61st and Garnett was closed for about 2 hours as crews battled the fire and secured the scene.
