TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- A Texas man died Monday after jumping from his car during a police pursuit and getting run over, police said.

Michael McClendon was driving a black Toyota Corolla just east of downtown Tulsa Sunday night when an officer attempted to stop him for driving with his headlights off, officer Scott Walton said.

"The car sped up and somehow the driver bailed out while the car was running, the car ran over him and killed him," Walton said.

McClendon was pronounced dead at St. John Medical Center at 2:13 AM Monday.

Police found a mask and a loaded .22-caliber handgun in the car, which was stolen, Walton said.

A passenger in McClendon's vehicle was transported to police headquarters for questioning, but wasn't arrested, Walton said.

McClendon was wanted by Texas authorities for shooting his girlfriend, Walton said.
