Many people were forced to leave their pets behind, in the rush to escape Hurricane Katrina. The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says two thirds of the people in New Orleans have pets.
In some cases, the animals are all the survivors have left and they're trying desperately to track them down. Emergency animal shelters have been set up for the estimated 2,000 lost or abandoned animals.
Tulsa's Humane Society is also helping. A team of three veterinary technicians and a disaster relief specialist are headed to Louisiana. Gina Gardner with the Tulsa Humane Society: "It's absolutely important to do it because there are thousands of animals down there that are in need and there is alot of people here that want to help. We have alot of experience and that's what they need.â€
The Humane Society is also collecting cash, dog treats, animal toys and box fans. You can take your donations to the Tulsa Humane Society at 6808 South Memorial or call 250-DOGS.
