More than 20 of Tulsa's radio and television stations teamed up Friday to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims.
The News on 6 set up shop early Friday morning at LaFortune Park to help out with the Broadcast Day of Unity. News on 6 reporter Omar Villafranca was there and found out just how generous Oklahomans can be.
Starting at 6 AM Friday, morning commuters grabbed a cup of coffee and emptied their pockets, all to help the Red Cross and Hurricane Katrina victims.
More than 20 TV and radio stations crowded the airwaves, asking, pleading and some even begging their listeners to drop off some dough. And people were listening. One man dropped off a $1,000 check. Other people drove thru and tossed a in a few Ben Franklins. Several donors gave money earlier in the week, but came back and gave even more. Martha Vaughan with KJMZ: "I think the heart has a capacity to love beyond a week. And that's why they're still giving and I think they're still giving and it'll keep going this way because this is America."
People are not only opening their wallets, they are opening their homes. Several Zydeco musicians usually play on Bourbon Street, but now live with a Claremore family. Steven Phillips: "next thing you know, they had us a gig and we didn't have anywhere else to go so they are putting us up and everything. God bless them.â€
Several radio stations auctioned off several items, including concert tickets and backstage passes.
At the end of the day, Broadcast Day of Unity had collected over $100,000, all for the Red Cross.
