OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren wants federal education officials to provide emergency assistance to Oklahoma schools that are taking in evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.
Boren says emergency funding is needed because of the financial strain placed on already overburdened schools in his eastern Oklahoma district.
Boren says schools will face many challenges in absorbing evacuees, such as school supplies, additional text books and transportation costs that are rising with the price of gasoline.
Boren called for a taskforce of educators from states affected by this disaster to advise federal education officials. Boren urged that state Superintendent of Education Sandy Garrett be on the taskforce.
