PONCA CITY, Okla. (AP) -- Officials in Ponca City have recovered the body of a Kansas girl who drowned in an Oklahoma lake while playing with friends.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 3-year-old Maya Wells of Arkansas City, Kansas, was swimming at Kaw Lake near Ponca City Saturday evening.

Troopers say Wells was wearing a life jacket when one of the children she was playing with removed the jacket. She then stepped off a drop off and went underwater. She didn't resurface.

Wells' body was recovered by a Ponca City dive team late Saturday, 20 feet from the shoreline in about 12 feet of water.

Troopers say the incident is under investigation.
