NEW YORK (AP) _ Tracy Smith, a reporter for CBS' morning news program for five years, has been appointed co-anchor with Russ Mitchell on Saturday's version of ``The Early Show.''

She replaces Gretchen Carlson, who quit to join Fox News Channel, CBS announced Tuesday.

Smith has subbed for Carlson in recent weeks. She joined CBS News in 2000 from Channel One News, the daily newscast that airs in high schools across the country.

Her debut as co-anchor is Saturday.
