OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Tolls are scheduled to be lifted from Oklahoma's turnpikes in 23 years.
And state transportation officials are already wondering how the state's 606 miles of toll roads will be maintained when toll revenue disappears.
The o$1.2-billion in debt owed on Oklahoma's ten toll roads should be paid off in 2028 unless a new turnpike or major expansion is authorized.
The turnpikes will be turned over to the state Department of Transportation. But transportation officials say the state already has a $9-billion backlog of maintenance needs to bring roads and bridges up to public safety standards.
The Oklahoma Transportation Authority, which oversees state turnpikes, says between $60-million and $70-million a year would be needed to maintain the state's turnpikes.
