McALESTER, Okla. (AP) _ Pittsburg County commissioners are asking the state jail inspector to wait until after a sales tax election before imposing sanctions on the county jail.

Jail Inspector Don Garrison has told commissioners he may shut down the jail because of overcrowding. The Pittsburg County jail has a capacity of 65 inmates, but up to 105 have been held there recently.

Commissioner Randy Crone says the commission is planning an election in October to ask residents to approve a sales tax to pay for renovations and expansion of the jail. Crone says commissioners are considering asking for a half-cent tax increase.
