WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congressman Tom Cole says he's considering a bid to become chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Oklahoma Republican says he's been approached by several members wanting to know if he'd consider the job. He says he's greatly interested in the position, but hasn't made a decision on whether to pursue it yet.

The group is essentially in charge of campaigning to make sure incumbent Republicans are re-elected to the House of Representatives.

The post would not become open until after the 2006 election. That's when current chairman Tom Reynolds of New York has to step down because of term limits.
