OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Sitting in the shade of the Survivor Tree, Governor Brad Henry Monday signs a $5-million funding bill to create an endowment to help fund the Oklahoma City National Memorial.
Henry says it was fitting that he sign the bill on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the bombing and in the shadows of the scarred but flourishing American elm tree.
The Survivor Tree became a symbol of hope and restoration after the bombing of the Alfred -P- Murrah building, which killed 168 people.
He was joined at the ceremony by Memorial Chairman Frank Hill, and Representative Susan Winchester and Senator Bernest Cain, authors of the legislation.
Hill says the state money will match $5-million from the federal government and another $5-million being raised from the private sector.
