An Oklahoman making big news is Checotah's own Carrie Underwood. She's been named "Oklahoman of the Year”.

The "American Idol" winner was given the honor by "Oklahoma Today" magazine. Editors for the magazine say Carrie encompasses all that makes the state great and has the character and humility to be so honored.

Carrie's debut album, "Some Hearts", climbed to Number 1 on Billboard's country album chart after its release last month.

She's the highest-debuting country artist since Billboard began using Soundscan to rank album sales.
