OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Oklahoma County sheriff's deputies thought they might have a criminal pursuit on their hands when a woman screeched to a halt near Luther, Okla.

Little did they know they were about to help the woman's daughter _ and a new colleague's wife _ give birth to a baby girl.

Sara Cain, 23, of Luther called her doctor Monday after she began having labor symptoms. She was preparing to go to the hospital about 2 p.m. when her water broke.

``I really thought I was going to go into labor right then,'' Cain said.

She called her mother, Barbara Hawkins, who raced to Luther. On her way, she was spotted by Oklahoma County sheriff's Lt. Mike Muehlenweg, who told deputies Matt Davis and Chad Mosier to pursue her.

``She wouldn't stop, but had her emergency flashers on and waved at us, so we followed her,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Cain waited patiently for help while talking to her husband, Scott Miller, on the phone. Miller, 23, was in Spencer that day being trained for his new job as a detention officer at the Oklahoma County jail.

Over the phone, Miller sang Christmas carols to his wife, telling her to keep her legs crossed and to think about other things.

``He was trying to keep my mind off of it so the baby wouldn't come so fast, but it just doesn't work that way,'' Cain said, laughing.

When deputies arrived, Cain was in heavy labor, Muehlenweg said. Mosier and Muehlenweg helped Cain while her mother and sister, Ashley Cain, took instruction from Midwest City 911 operator Teresa Coplen.

Less than an hour later, Angela Renae Miller was born, weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces. Her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and arm, but Muehlenweg was able to unravel it.

Cain and her daughter were home and doing fine Friday, she said.

Muehlenweg said he'd helped deliver plenty of babies before, but none were human.

``They were cattle,'' he said. ``I told her it was the first time I'd helped with a two-legged baby.''

Muehlenweg said he had no idea Cain was married to Miller, who he'd seen hours earlier at the training center.

``After that I told him, 'Well, welcome to the sheriff's office.'''
