OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- General Motors Corporation officials confirm plans to cease production at its Oklahoma City plant during the first week of February.
Governor Brad Henry's spokesman Paul Sund says commerce officials were notified yesterday that the automaker plans to shut down the plant around February 6th, 2006.
Sund says Henry has assembled a working group that is looking at ways to retrain GM employees for other jobs.
The plant assembles sport utility vehicles. It is one of nine North American assembly, stamping and power-train plants that GM says it will close by 2008.
The Oklahoma City plant employs about 2,000 hourly employees and 200 salaried workers.
