Many Hurricane Katrina evacuees have resettled in our area. More are getting settled all the time.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells takes us to a special party for Charlie 6. She was rescued from the Katrina floodwaters in New Orleans. Friday afternoon, she headed for a new home in Broken Arrow.
Friday was a big day for Charlie 6, she's heading for a new home, but first it's a party. Laura Littlebear with Woodland East Animal Hospital: "We've got a cake we've got some dog treats and little party gifts for everybody."
These are specially prepared dog party treats from the Dog Dish. We first met Charlie and some other dogs and cats rescued in the wake of Hurricane Katrina back in September. The animals were just back from New Orleans and getting cleaned up and medically checked over.
Most of them have been re-united with their owners. Charlie was special from the beginning; she jumped off a porch and swam through murky water as if demanding to be rescued. Laura Littlebear: "She was absolutely going back with us." She was only about 8 weeks old then, now she's getting ready to head for a new home and that is what Friday’s party was all about.
Laura Littlebear: "Come here Charlie." The party girl gets the first lick, then like a good girl she shares with her friends. Pretty soon, pizza snacks for everybody. Not all the dogs are Hurricane Katrina evacuees; they are regulars at the doggie daycare and are Charlie 6's playmates.
Laura Littlebear: “the Humane Society still has a lot of dogs they took from Louisiana shelters." Most of them are healthy now and ready for adoption, Friday was Charlie 6's lucky day. "You ready to go home?" So off she goes with her new family. Maybe she can come back for a visit, tell everybody about her new big backyard.
There are many hurricane evacuee dogs and cats in the Tulsa area looking for homes. If you're interested you can find them at the Humane Society’s website.
